Our seminar explores the dynamic role Shakespeare and his work play in intercultural celebration, mobility and mediation. From the aftermath of World War II until now, festivals have deployed Shakespeare as a model of inclusive theatre to provide alternative answers to Europe’s multi-faceted crises. In the face of war, disasters and displacement, Shakespeare on festival stages continues to be a cultural and social game changer: it stands in solidarity with and offers sanctuary to the silenced, the oppressed and the dispossessed, working on healing.
An hour long introduction to the role of Shakepeare in the world, with the opportunity for audience questions and discussion.
The speakers will draw and expand on the material contained in their Bloomsbury Press publication Shakespeare on European Festival Stages. published in 2022
