The Northern Lass, by Richard Brome
Online Rehearsed Reading
Directed by Tom Straszewski
7.15pm, Tuesday 1st June
Sponsored by King’s College London AHRI and the London Shakespeare Centre (LSC).
Up to his eyeballs in debt, Sir Philip Luckless has splashed out on a knighthood – a tempting bait for the rich widow Audrey Fitchow. The only thing stopping him getting his hands on her assets is getting her into bed. But in between them is a lovestruck Northern Lass, her lecherous uncle Squelch, a governess, a guvnor and an incoherent Cornishman…
The Northern Lass is a rarely-performed comedy by Richard Brome, one of Shakespeare’s successors at the King’s Men. This rehearsed reading brings together actors from York and London, featuring ongoing research into regional accents and Original Pronunciation in early modern theatre. A Q&A session with researcher Josefina Venegas Meza and members of the cast will follow.
