Shakespeare and Mystery Plays

Shakespeare and Mystery Plays

A Zoom discussion with performances

This performance-led event explores the connections between Shakespeare and the Mystery Plays. Did Shakespeare watch mystery plays as a boy? How much did the theatre of Shakespeare’s time owe to the medieval tradition? Is the Porter in Macbeth based on a much earlier, devilish gatekeeper?

Join us to discuss all these questions and more. ‘Shakespeare and Mystery Plays’ includes an introductory lecture by Professor Helen Cooper FBA (Life Fellow of Magdalene, Professor Emeritus of Medieval and Renaissance English at the University of Cambridge, and author of Shakespeare and the Medieval World), semi-staged readings from the Mysteries and from Shakespeare’s plays that illuminate the stylistic and narrative links between them, and a panel discussion with academics and creatives.
