Saturday 26th April, 7:30pm
York St John University Creative Centre Auditorium
A gentle collision of the Ukrainian play Mavka (the Forest Song) with texts from Shakespeare celebrating the natural world.
Following last year’s production Working Title, which brought together actors from Ukraine and York along with members of York’s Ukrainian community, we continue to bring people together through theatre.
Under the leadership of Dara Klymenko, York now has its on Ukrainian theatre group D-Space, which rehearses and performs at York St John University, who generously support them with space and technical facilities.
Mavka is one of the most widely known works of Ukrainian literature. Originally a play by the celebrated writer Lesya Ukrainka, it has been widely interpreted as theatre, ballet and in 2023 an award winning animation.
Shakespeare saw the countryside, and Forests in particular, as places for his characters to find their true identity. This is most evident in As You Like It and A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The natural world runs as a theme through Shakespeare’s plays and is at the heart of Mavka.
Sharing a common theme, we will also share languages, to continue the important bond between our festival, and the City of York, and our friends from Ukraine.
Presented by York International Shakespeare Festival in collaboration with D:Space.
