World Premiere

Iconic touring theatre company Footsbarn Theatre will premiere its brand new production of Shakespeare’s bittersweet comedy Twelfth Night at the York International Shakespeare Festival this spring, followed by a UK and European tour throughout the summer.

It will be the first full Shakespeare production performed by Footsbarn Theatre in the UK in over 15 years since it won over audiences and critics with its adaptation of A Midsummer’s Night Dream at Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

In an impressive body of work spanning over 50 years, there are not many Shakespeare plays that Footsbarn hasn’t put their legendary name to, but Twelfth Night is one, which is why the company decided that it was high time it tackled this most bittersweet masterpiece.

Now, perhaps more than any other time, this play comes into its own by exploring the themes of gender identity that younger generations are bravely bringing to the world’s attention.

Footsbarn Travelling Theatre is one of the world’s leading touring theatre companies performing, for the most part, in its circus big top across the globe. It began life in Cornwall, UK, in 1971, when a group of young performers started rehearsing in the barn of Trewen, a farmhouse near the village of Trewidland, and was born out of a dream to create a form of theatre that was popular, generous and accessible to all. For the past 25 years, it has been based in Maillet, France.
