“I have no brother, I am like no brother.
I am myself, alone.”
Richard, Duke of Gloucester. Henry VI, Part 3
A bare space, a crown and a throne. An ensemble cast in a powerful production of actor generated theatricality and transformation, telling a cautionary tale about power and greed, which shows how a tyrant can rise in a torn and broken society.
York Shakespeare Project presents all three parts of Henry VI as one show, directed by Irwin Appel, Professor of Theater at University of California Santa Barbara. Irwin’s theatre company, Naked Shakes, was selected to perform The Death Of Kings, his adaptation of Shakespeare’s history cycle, at the Verona International Shakespeare Festival in 2023. His company’s title reflects his philosophy with its emphasis on the actor and the word.
Irwin is honoured to have been invited by York Shakespeare Project to bring to the stage a key part of York and England’s story through Shakespeare’s early history play: “to find the clues in it, and live in the world of what the imagery evokes.”
His condensed version of the Henry VI trilogy promises to be a fascinating and thrilling piece of physical theatre.
